Acidosis

Description

Acidosis occurs when the blood becomes too acidic, caused by an accumulation of acid, or a loss of alkali. It has been categorised into two types: Metabolic and respiratory. Metabolic acidosis occurs when a metabolic pathway in the body produces too much acid. An example of this occurs in diabetics, and is called ketoacidosis (the abnormal buildup of molecules called ketones).

The second type is respiratory acidosis, which occurs if too much carbon dioxide accumulates in the blood due to an insufficiency in the body’s gas exchange system. People with Asthma might experience this type of acidosis.

The condition can be detected most efficiently by blood tests.
